"Dr. Ardovino and her staff were professional, courteous and kind. I was recommended to see her by my wife who was complaining about my snoring. After a sleep study, Dr. Ardovino fit me for a dental appliance which solved my snoring issue. I wake up feeling more rested and both my wife and I are happy I don’t snore anymore. Highly recommend Dr. Ardovino if you are having any sleepiness during the day or waking up multiple times in the night."

Eric M.

"Dr. Ardovino is very thorough and determined to help me get the best sleep possible. Since getting my dental appliance in Fall of 2024, I no longer snore and sleep through the night without getting up once. I am so very thankful to she and her staff for their hard work and dedication. Don’t wait another day! Call Alabama Dental Sleep and Wellness and get started! You’ll be glad you did."

Sleep Apnea Treatment FAQs

Helping Answer
Your Questions

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a medical condition that impacts your ability to breathe as you sleep. It causes episodes that will trigger your brain to wake up throughout the night due to your brain not receiving enough oxygen, ultimately causing a host of other symptoms as well.

What are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

If you have obstructive sleep apnea, which is the most common type, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Loud, chronic snoring
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Changes in your mood
  • Waking up gasping for air
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Nocturia (waking up to use the bathroom several times at night)

What Causes Sleep Apnea?

There are several factors that can increase your risk of sleep apnea, but nothing that has been directly correlated with causing sleep apnea. Some of these risk factors include:

  • Fat accumulation around the neck/having a thicker neck and large tongue
  • Endocrine disorders, including low thyroid hormones and PCOS
  • Aging, which can cause fatty tissue build-up in the neck and tongue area, and menopause
  • Family history of sleep apnea

If you have several of these risk factors, it’s a good idea to take our sleep apnea quiz or give us a call to schedule a consultation.

How Do you Treat Sleep Apnea?

At Alabama Dental Sleep and Wellness, we primarily treat obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance treatment. We create a customized sleep appliance for patients to wear at night that keeps their airway unobstructed by moving their jaw forward. It’s excellent for patients who are CPAP-intolerant, as these devices are noise-free, sleek, and tend to be much more comfortable for light sleepers.
